This is Anne Harper, owner of the blog and facebook support group Dispelling Breastfeeding Myths. Here she talks about having 3 children, all with some form of oral restriction and why she chose to travel from N.Ireland to England to get some support and division of her youngest child’s frenulum. This is just one mother’s experience and is not intended as advice – medical or otherwise.

Hi, I am a third year midwifery student and I am going to the camp to volunteer at the women’s centre in two weeks with two other students. We already have a list of what is needed at the centre following the fire. Can you suggest anything else we can take to encourage breastfeeding and ensure the formula fed babies are safe?

And any other tips you would recommend.

Hi Claire that’s great! You’re welcome to email me through the contact form on this website for a chat. Have you seen my most recent blog post on here? https://thebirthhub.co.uk/2017/01/31/trapped-post-fact-nightmare-infant-feeding-dunkirk-refugee-camp/

Hi Claire, the most obvious thing is encouraging the midwives to follow IYCFE guidance. They are suggesting, amongst other things, that powdered formula is made up with cold water – something not even recommended in normal circumstances. They need more cold water sterilising equipment and bottle brushes if they refuse to support mothers to cup feed.
